Women & Entrepreneurship

by Marcia Rosen
The Woman's Business Therapist

Q. Family and friends ask me to do a lot of "favors". That means "free work". It takes time away from my paying clients. How can I explain this without offending them and still protect myself?

A. We all do a few favors and freebees. There is a limit and you have to set it. You can gently tell family and friends you wish you could help them, however you are on a deadline for a number of projects and big clients who expect you to be on time. You wish you could help them out but your time and resources are limited.

You, most of all, have to deal with your own discomfort at saying "no" and feeling they won't like you anymore or, heaven forbid, be angry with you. They are being unreasonable and imposing on you, and if they react that way, you really are better off removing yourself from them.

Good friends and close family, people who care about you, will understand graciously. Women entrepreneurs need to know how to take care of themselves and protect their businesses.

Her new book, The Woman's Business Therapist: Eliminate the MindBlocks and RoadBlocks to Success, addresses the twelve most common obstacles women entrepreneurs encounter in a format that simulates business therapy sessions.

Marcia's story is of a woman who went into business in the early 1960's, became a successful businesswoman and went on to become a leader for other women in business. She understands the conflicts and interferences entrepreneurial women face today because she was there herself and made it through, and she knows through her one-on-one work with hundreds of other women what the common difficulties and proven solutions are.
